Excellent (5)
Professor: Timothy Calkins
Teaching Method: Lectures, Cases, Simulations
This was definitely one of my favorite classes at Kellogg. I had a great group, consisting of 5 friends who were hard workers and a lot of fun to work with. Calkins exuded a wonderful combination of keen insights, contagious energy, nonstop entertainment, and witty humor. There was a moment I'll never forget in which Calkins drew a rough graph of Viagra sales and it happened to look just like an erect penis. Needless to say, the whole class was laughing hysterically. Regarding the Markstrat simulation, you could spend endless hours to come up with decisions(I believe you have to make 7 throughout the class). As tempting as it might be, don't do it. Allocate ownership of different components of the decision-making to different group members and trust them to own it completely. For example, I was in charge of monitoring and predicting competitors' strategy while someone else was in charge of monitoring salesforce performance and forming strategies on expansion, reallocation, and cutbacks. The other 3 members of our group formed the brand management team of our own product line. Our group got really into the simulation. When results were about to come in, group members would constantly be checking their computers to see whether we had received anything. I wholeheartedly recommend you to take this class, but since teamwork is a huge part, absolutely make sure that you have a good group. Purple A for life!
